Whilst the film was about the destruction of lives in Cambodia

I decided to expand the view and paint the studio behind in all its messy chaos

"Riverbank" invites you to pause and reflect amidst the tranquil beauty of the water's edge

This work was inspired by a painting trip to Tasmania and the “killing fields” in the North

And I removed the fence

Originally conceived as a view across pasture cut off by a fenceline

and the dense foliage

The painting evokes the stillness of a hidden riverbank

I took some cuttings before the autumn took hold and arranged them as best I could on my old battered orange work chest

you can’t help but be moved by the destruction and the waste

It was a study for a larger work of the same name and finalist in the 2025 Calleen Art Award at the Cowra Regional Art Gallery in NSW
